AHMEDABAD: South Africa clinched a dramatic victory over Afghanistan after two Super Overs in a pulsating T20 World Cup 2026 Group D match in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.Put in to bat, South Africa posted 187 for six from their 20 overs, built around half-centuries from Ryan Rickelton (61) and Quinton de Kock (59).
Afghanistan matched the total but were bowled out for 187 in 19.5 overs, despite Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s superb 84. The chase went down to the wire, with Kagiso Rabada conceding two no-balls in a tense final over.
In the first Super Over, South Africa’s Lungi Ngidi, who had taken three wickets in the main match, conceded 17 runs as Azmatullah Omarzai struck two sixes and a four. South Africa responded through Tristan Stubbs, who smashed a six off the final ball to force a second Super Over.
Stubbs and David Miller then took control, hammering three sixes off Omarzai to pile up 24 runs. Afghanistan needed an extraordinary response, and Gurbaz kept hopes alive with three consecutive sixes, but he was dismissed off the final delivery, sealing South Africa’s win.
The result leaves Afghanistan with two defeats from their opening Group D matches, while New Zealand and South Africa sit in strong positions with two wins from two.
