MUMBAI: Mohammed Shami became the highest wicket-taker of the 2023 Cricket World Cup following his seven-wicket haul as hosts India beat New Zealand in the semifinal by 70 runs to qualify for final.

Shami picked seven for 57 to register the best ODI bowling figures by an Indian.

Adam Zampa is second on the list with 22 wickets in nine matches, while Dilshan Madushanka is placed third with 21 wickets in nine games.

“I was waiting for my chances. I didn’t play a lot of white-ball cricket. My return started against New Zealand in the group stage. We talk a lot of variations, but I still believe in pitching it up and getting wickets with the new ball. I dropped a catch for Kane Williamson, I shouldn’t have. I felt terrible. But the focus was to try and take pace off, see if they’re hitting it in the air,” said Shami.

Earlier, Virat Kohli hits 117 – a record 50th ODI century, that took him past Sachin Tendulkar while Shreyas smacked 105 off 70, Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten 80 off 66 to help India post  397 for 4.

It was the highest score in a men’s World Cup knockout game.
