BRISBANE: Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has suffered a knee cartilage injury while playing in Australia’s Big Bash League and will return home for rehabilitation ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup starting in February, Brisbane Heat confirmed on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old picked up the injury while fielding during Saturday’s victory over Adelaide Strikers. After consultations between Brisbane Heat and the Pakistan Cricket Board’s medical staff, it was agreed that Afridi would travel back to Pakistan for further treatment and recovery.
Afridi was making his debut in the Australian franchise-based T20 league and featured in four matches for the Heat, claiming two wickets. Despite his short stint, the left-arm pacer said he relished the experience, describing the BBL as “lots of good, skilful cricket” and a challenge he enjoyed.
Pakistan will be hoping Afridi recovers in time, with their T20 World Cup campaign set to begin on February 7 against the Netherlands in Colombo. His fitness will be crucial to Pakistan’s plans as they prepare for the global tournament.
