NEW DELHI: What a year 2025 was for Formula 1, one that nearly saw a far from fastest Red Bull eclipsing the fastest car on the grid with Max Verstappen, a four-time world champion almost running away with another title.

But as Verstappen fans breathed a sigh of relief, so too did the fans of Carlos Sainz who has against his name — a checkered stint with McLaren in the past and four Grand Prix wins, each of them with Ferrari.

Sainz’s standout achievement came not in red, but in blue.

The 31-year-old guided Williams to two podium finishes — third place in Azerbaijan and Qatar.

It was an accomplishment that eluded even Aston Martin, a constructor with substantially larger budget.

Fair to say, Sainz’s 2025 campaign with Williams Racing unfolded akin to a tightly wound narrative — one rooted in ambition, tempered by harsh realities, and punctuated with glimpses of brilliance.

After quitting Ferrari, perhaps sidelined, where he had achieved race victories and high expectations, the Spaniard’s transition to Williams was widely seen as a bold move — a chance to reset, redefine, and perhaps rekindle a deeper sense of racing purpose.

But few could have predicted just how compelling the story would become.

Reinvention at Grove

From the outset, Sainz’s season has been about reinvention.

The Williams FW47, powered by a Mercedes engine, offered a different character from the Ferrari cars he had driven for years.

Adjusting to the team’s technical philosophies and extracting peak performance week in and week out required not just skill, but patience — a quality Sainz displayed with measured resolve.

Early in the year, fans noticed his mature temperament: calm under pressure and precise in execution, even when results fluctuated. Those traits, quiet in isolation, became the foundation of what would emerge as one of his most consistent campaigns.

Williams, a team with a glorious heritage but struggling for results in recent seasons, found in Sainz a leader both on and off the track.

His ability to communicate nuanced feedback forged a stronger bond with engineers, accelerating the car’s development and sharpening race strategy calls.

By mid‑season, that collaboration began to show tangible benefits.

Resilience as a defining trait

In Azerbaijan, Sainz took the podium, a third‑place finish that signalled a turning point.

It wasn’t just a statistical highlight — it was proof that Williams could compete for more than midfield respectability.

Yet 2025 was not without its frustrations.

At the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Sainz’s weekend started with promise — strong pace in the sprint qualifying — yet ended in disappointment.

A first‑lap collision with Italy’s Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) led to his retirement from the race and a five‑place grid penalty for the next event, a sobering reminder of how thin the margin is between glory and setback.

The Madrid-born former Renault and McLaren driver openly took responsibility for his part in the incident, demonstrating both accountability and a fighter’s mindset geared toward redemption.

That said, what sets this season apart is how Sainz’s narrative mirrors that of Williams itself — resilience in the face of adversity.

In Singapore, starting deep in the field, he clawed his way through the pack to score a hard‑fought point, showcasing both strategic nous and tyre management skills that have become hallmarks of his driving this year.

Sainz in 2025 was more than results: about impact

More than results, Sainz’s impact resonates in the locker room and in the garage.

Young drivers and seasoned engineers alike have spoken of his willingness to share insights, his calm under scrutiny, and his ability to extract positivity even from negative weekends.

It’s this blend of leadership and performance that has elevated Williams’ Constructors’ Championship standing, placing them firmly in contention and reviving memories of the team’s historic days.

Legacy Beyond the Standings

As curtains fall on 2025, one notes Sainz’s growing legacy with Williams — which may have even better days up ahead- feels like more than a season’s story.

It’s the testament to perseverance, craft, and the relentless pursuit of consistency.

In a sport so hardwired in the ‘now’, Sainz’s results (64 points), eight more than Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin outing, point to a performance that’ll stay as impressive today and tomorrow.

He may have got a P9, but ranking his maiden season in a Williams (far from being the blazing quick machine such as McLaren) ordinary would be the kind of thinking one would call benign.
