Indian Wells : World number one Aryna Sabalenka debuted her new engagement ring while securing a straight-sets victory at the Indian Wells Open on Friday. 💍🎾
Sabalenka defeated Japan’s Himeno Sakatsume 6-4, 6-2 in the second round, but it wasn’t just her performance that caught attention. The 27-year-old also wore a striking oval-cut diamond engagement ring for the first time in competition after becoming engaged earlier this week to businessman Georgios Frangulis.
Speaking after the match, Sabalenka joked that the ring felt “comfortable and shiny,” adding that she had checked carefully that there was no risk of the diamond falling out. She even laughed that the sparkling ring might distract her opponent.
Sabalenka said the proposal came as a complete surprise, revealing that her team had secretly known about the plan. The Belarusian admitted she was emotional during the moment and initially worried about how she looked in the photos, asking photographers to focus mainly on the ring.
Frangulis is the CEO of global health-food brand Oakberry, and Sabalenka humorously said the main thing she has learned about him is that “he likes Oakberry a lot,” while he has learned that she can be “a little crazy.”
