Morocco : The tenure of Walid Regragui as head coach of the Morocco national football team has come to an end, closing a remarkable chapter in the history of Moroccan football. ⚽
Regragui earned widespread acclaim after guiding the Atlas Lions to a historic run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where Morocco became the first African and Arab nation to reach the semi-finals of the tournament. His achievement secured him a reputation as one of the most influential coaches in Moroccan football history.
During his tenure, the team also recorded an impressive 19 consecutive victories, reflecting the strong discipline, unity and belief he instilled within the squad. However, the journey was not without setbacks. Morocco were eliminated in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations 2023 in Ivory Coast, a result that disappointed many fans.
Before his coaching success, Regragui enjoyed a professional playing career as a right-back, featuring for several clubs including Racing Santander in Spain. As a coach, he also achieved major club success with Fath Union Sport—winning the Moroccan Throne Cup in 2014—and with Wydad Athletic Club, where he captured the CAF Champions League and the Moroccan league title in 2022.
Regragui leaves behind a strong legacy: a confident generation of Moroccan players, a competitive national team respected globally, and a winning mentality built during his tenure. His successor, Mohamed Wahbi, now faces the challenge of continuing that success on both the continental and international stages.
