Miami Gardens, FL, USA : All first-round matches scheduled for Wednesday at the Miami Open were cancelled due to persistent rain in South Florida, organisers said.
Officials had hoped conditions would improve in time for a night session featuring Venus Williams and Britain’s Francesca Jones, followed by Matteo Berrettini against Alexandre Muller, but heavy downpours left the Grandstand court unplayable.
The disrupted event is the second leg of the “Sunshine Double” following the Indian Wells tournament.
World number one Aryna Sabalenka and Czech player Jakub Mensik are the defending champions at the combined WTA 1000 and ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
