DOHA: Qatar is participating in the 46th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), which begins on Monday in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, bringing together key decision-makers from across the continent.
The assembly is expected to witness the election of HE President of the Qatar Olympic Committee Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani as the new OCA President, a development set to usher in a new era for Asia’s largest sports organization.
More than 350 sports officials from 45 Asian National Olympic Committees are attending the gathering, alongside representatives of international sports bodies. The agenda includes reviews of reports from organizing committees for major upcoming regional events, notably the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan (September 19–October 4), the Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China (April 22–30), and the 2026 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (February 8–10).
The General Assembly will open with a welcome address by OCA First Vice-President and Hong Kong Olympic Committee Chairman Timothy Fok, followed by remarks from HE Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who also heads the National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan.
Participants will also approve the minutes of the 45th General Assembly held in Kuwait last May and hear reports from regional vice-presidents, as the OCA outlines its roadmap for the coming years.
