DOHA: Qatari national table tennis team has officially qualified for the 2026 World Team Championship following a 3–1 victory over Sri Lanka.
The match took place at the Athletics Centre – Kalinga Stadium in the city of Bhubaneswar, India, as part of the Asian Team Championship.
The World Championships will be held in London.
It was a tough match between the two teams. Mohamed Abdulwahab lost the opening game to Sri Lanka’s Mohamed Mohamed in five sets (9–11, 11–4, 9–11, 12–10, 6–11).
However, Abdullah Abdulwahab leveled the score by defeating Chameera Ginigé in four sets (11–7, 11–9, 6–11, 11–6). Rowad Al-Nasser then gave Qatar the lead after beating Nimish Ranshagoda in four sets (5–11, 11–2, 11–6, 11–9).
Mohamed Abdulwahab returned to seal the win with a dominant straight-sets victory over Chameera Ginigé (11–2, 11–3, 11–5), giving Qatar the overall win with a score of 3–1.
With this victory, Qatar has officially secured a spot in the 2026 World Team Championship in London, after a series of strong performances throughout the Asian Championship.
Qatar began its group stage campaign with victories over Nepal (3–1) and Bangladesh (3–0), before losing to Thailand (0–3), which placed the team second in its group behind Thailand, who advanced to the knockout stage. The Qatari team then continued its journey in the placement rounds.
This qualification marks a new achievement for Qatar, highlighting the ongoing development and strong presence of Qatari table tennis at the continental level, and securing a well-deserved place in the upcoming World Championship in London in 2026.
