Lausanne, Switzerland: The Netherlands men produced a determined comeback to overturn a two-goal deficit and defeat Spain 4–3 in a pulsating FIH Hockey Pro League encounter in Valencia on Thursday.
Playing their opening match of the season in front of an energetic home crowd, Spain made a fast and confident start, putting early pressure on the Dutch defence and taking full advantage of their penalty corner opportunities.
Spain Strike Early with Set-Piece Precision
Spain opened the scoring in the 10th minute after winning the first penalty corner of the match. A deflection off a Dutch defender fell kindly for Marc Vizcaino, who reacted quickest to lift the ball into the roof of the net.
The hosts doubled their advantage late in the first quarter with another well-executed penalty corner. Pepe Cunill dragged the ball cleanly between the postman and goalkeeper to give Spain a deserved 2–0 lead. Spain continued to dominate much of the second quarter, creating repeated attacking waves, but the Netherlands gradually settled and began to find a foothold.
That shift was rewarded just before half-time when the Dutch earned a penalty corner of their own, converted by Pepijn van der Heijden to reduce the deficit to one.
Netherlands Take Control After Break

The momentum swung decisively at the start of the third quarter. Koen Bijen capitalised on a Spanish back pass, driving into the circle and firing home the equaliser to bring the Netherlands level.
With confidence growing, the Dutch intensified their pressure and soon edged ahead through Thierry Brinkman, who finished smartly from a tight angle following a slick team move. The Netherlands carried that authority into the final period, earning a series of penalty corners before Tijmen Reyenga converted in the 59th minute to make it 4–2.
Spain found late consolation when Guillermo Fortuno scored in the final minute, but the Dutch defence held firm to secure a hard-fought and impressive victory.
