NEW DELHI: The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has officially confirmed that Pakistan’s men’s hockey team, known as the Green Shirts, will participate in the 2025-26 season of the FIH Hockey Pro League. This marks Pakistan’s debut in the prestigious league, adding a historic and competitive edge to the upcoming season.

Pakistan earned this opportunity after finishing as runners-up in the FIH Hockey Nations Cup held earlier this year in Malaysia. Although New Zealand won the tournament, Hockey New Zealand later declined the invitation to join the Pro League. In line with FIH regulations, the next eligible team — Pakistan — was offered the spot and has since accepted.

FIH President Tayyab Ikram welcomed Pakistan’s return to top-tier international hockey, calling it a significant milestone. “It’s great to see Pakistan back in elite competition. Their return brings renewed energy and global interest to the Pro League. This moment reflects the importance of building opportunities within our sport, and how clear pathways can elevate teams to the highest level. Congratulations to Pakistan for qualifying through the Nations Cup and earning their rightful place in the ‘League of the Best’,” he stated.

Pakistan will now compete alongside top international teams including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, England, Germany, India, Netherlands, and Spain in what will be the seventh edition of the men’s Pro League. They replace Ireland, who were relegated after finishing ninth in the previous season.

The inclusion of Pakistan — a team with a rich and decorated history in international hockey — is expected to enhance both the competitiveness and global appeal of the league. Their participation not only marks a return to elite hockey but also promises to invigorate the sport’s following across South Asia and beyond.
