FES,Morocco: Raphael Onyedika struck twice and Paul Onuachu ended a four-year international goal drought as Nigeria defeated 10-man Uganda 3-1 in Fes on Tuesday, completing a flawless Group C campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Already assured of top spot, the Super Eagles still delivered a dominant display despite resting several regular starters. Onyedika set the tone with a brace, while Onuachu’s long-awaited goal underlined Nigeria’s attacking depth. Uganda managed a consolation through Rogers Mato, but their night unravelled amid chaos, including a red card for Salim Magoola and an injury that forced them to use three different goalkeepers.
Nigeria finished top of the pool with nine points, ahead of Tunisia and Tanzania, who progressed to the last 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams after their 1-1 draw earlier on Tuesday. Uganda’s exit capped a turbulent tournament for coach Paul Put’s side.
Having been losing finalists two years ago and reeling from the shock of missing out on 2026 World Cup qualification, Nigeria’s assured group-stage performances suggest a team determined to mount a serious title challenge.
