MELBOURNE: Fifth seed Lorenzo Musetti delivered a composed and creative performance to defeat American Taylor Fritz 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 at Rod Laver Arena, booking his place in the Australian Open quarter-finals for the first time and setting up a blockbuster clash with Novak Djokovic.
Fresh from a draining five-set win over Tomas Machac in the previous round, the Italian showed no signs of fatigue as he broke Fritz’s powerful serve twice to take control of the opening set. Musetti’s confidence grew as the match progressed, mixing authority with trademark artistry to dictate play from the baseline.
The 23-year-old raised his level late in the second set, winning three consecutive games to seize momentum before breaking early in the third and keeping constant pressure on the ninth-seeded American. Fritz fought hard and chased down balls across the court, but Musetti remained calm and served out the match in style.
“Honestly, I feel very proud,” Musetti said. “I came here with a different mentality and I think I made one of my best performances. I improved a lot on serve and tried to be more aggressive, especially with the forehand.”
Musetti now faces 10-time Australian Open champion Djokovic, who advanced after Jakub Mensik withdrew due to injury. Acknowledging the challenge ahead, Musetti added: “Every time I play Novak, it’s a lesson. It’s such an honour to share the court with him.”
