RABAT: Benin striker Steve Mounié says belief and determination are driving the Cheetahs as they chase more history at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025.
Benin have already achieved a landmark moment by claiming their first-ever victory at the tournament and are now targeting another milestone — equalling their best AFCON finish by reaching the quarter-finals. Standing in their way are seven-time champions Egypt, whom they face in the Round of 16 in Agadir on Monday.
“We will approach this match with determination and the belief that we can qualify, fully confident in our strengths,” Mounié told CAFOnline.
The Alanyaspor forward said those strengths are rooted not only in tactics and talent but also in the unity within the squad. He highlighted the positive atmosphere in the camp, where shared moments and light-hearted initiation rituals for AFCON debutants have helped ease pressure and strengthen bonds.
“The group is doing really well. We share moments of joy together,” Mounié said, underlining the spirit he believes could carry Benin to another historic result.
