MIAMI: Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi did not train on Wednesday after suffering a muscle strain in his left hamstring, prompting the postponement of the reigning MLS Cup champions’ preseason finale, the club said.
Inter Miami, who open their MLS campaign on Feb. 21, said the two-time defending league MVP sustained the injury during a preseason match against Barcelona Sporting Club in Ecuador last weekend. Messi scored in that game but was substituted in the second half.
Further medical tests confirmed the diagnosis, the club added.“His gradual return to training will depend on his clinical and functional progress in the coming days,” Inter Miami said in a statement.
As a result, Friday’s friendly against Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Puerto Rico has been postponed to Feb. 26.
