Lopetegui sees Zimbabwe friendly as a key step toward Arab Cup preparation

DOHA: Qatar head coach Julen Lopetegui described his team’s friendly against Zimbabwe as a valuable learning experience despite the defeat, emphasizing that the main focus remains on long-term progress ahead of the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025.

Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Lopetegui admitted that the squad was disappointed with the result but stressed that it represented only a small part of the journey. He highlighted that the match allowed him to test more players, particularly newcomers, to better assess their readiness and potential roles in the months ahead.

The Spanish coach explained that opting for just one international friendly this month was a deliberate decision, with preparations set to continue once the tenth round of the Qatar Stars League concludes. The squad will also be boosted by the return of players currently representing Al Sadd, Al Duhail, and Al Gharafa in the AFC Champions League Elite.

Lopetegui reaffirmed Qatar’s ambition to compete strongly and make a lasting impact in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025, scheduled for December. He added that he remains committed to refining the team’s plan and ensuring the best possible preparation for upcoming challenges.

Since taking charge in May, Lopetegui has overseen Qatar’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, beginning his tenure with a June friendly against Iran before guiding the side through crucial results against Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
