MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly said on Saturday that the 13th Indian Premier League (IPL) can be a truncated one if the situation around Coronavirus improves.

The BCCI on Friday postponed the start of this year’s IPL from March 29 to April 15 in wake of the pandemic, which has caused massive upheaval across the globe.

The tournament has been suspended till April 15.

Asked if the cash-rich event could be a curtailed one, Ganguly said, “It will happen, because if it is April 15, then, in any case 15 days are gone, it has to be truncated. How truncated, how many games, I can’t say at the moment.”

The former India captain was speaking to reporters after the end of IPL Governing Council meeting.

The BCCI met the IPL franchises owners here to discuss the COVID-19 outbreak and its impact on the upcoming season.

The Indian board along with all the IPL franchises have reiterated BCCI’s stand of putting safety and well-being of fans, athletes and employees as a priority.

The board will continue to monitor and work closely with Government of India, state governments and other state regulatory bodies to decide on the future course of action in the best interest of public health, BCCI said in a statement.

“The BCCI and all its stakeholders are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for everyone involved in our great sport and the nation,” it added.

The BCCI along with Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Friday has decided to reschedule the ongoing ODI series in view of the COVID-19 outbreak.
