Ahmedabad : Arshdeep Singh was fined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday after the India fast bowler threw the ball at Daryl Mitchell during the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The incident occurred in the 11th over of New Zealand national cricket team’s chase on Sunday when Mitchell played the ball back towards Arshdeep, who threw it directly at the batter, striking him on the pads.
Mitchell reacted angrily and moved towards Arshdeep, who walked away without apologising, prompting the umpire to intervene. Suryakumar Yadav, captain of the India national cricket team, later approached Mitchell to apologise.
The ICC said Arshdeep had breached its Code of Conduct for “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner” and fined him 15% of his match fee.
Arshdeep apologised to Mitchell at the end of the over and again after the match, and accepted the sanction.
India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs to become the first team to win the men’s T20 World Cup three times.
