RABAT: Morocco underlined their Africa Cup of Nations credentials with a commanding 3-0 victory over Zambia on Monday, finishing top of Group A with seven points. Forward Ayoub El Kaabi led the charge with a brace, while Brahim Diaz continued his fine form by adding a third goal.
El Kaabi opened the scoring early, powering home a header before producing a moment of brilliance with one of his trademark bicycle kicks to double the lead. Diaz then capped the performance, netting for the third successive game as the hosts swept Zambia aside.
The emphatic win marked a sharp upturn after Morocco’s tentative start to the tournament, which included a nervy opening victory over Comoros and an uninspiring 1-1 draw with Mali. This time, they looked every bit the favourites many expect to go deep in the 24-team competition.
Morocco were on the front foot from the outset, with Zambia goalkeeper Willard Mwanza called into action after just 12 seconds and again in the sixth minute to deny Abdessamad Ezzalzouli.
Defeat ended Zambia’s campaign, as they finished bottom of the group with two points, behind Comoros on goal difference.
