MUSCAT (Oman): Doha will host the 21st Asian Games in 2030 while Riyadh was named as host of the 2034 edition under a compromise agreed between the bidding cities, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced on Wednesday.

Doha achieved the highest number of votes in a secret ballot of the OCA’s 45 National Olympic Committees at the 39th OCA General Assembly.

Doha has hosted the Asian Games once in 2006.

Riyadh will now host the 22nd Asian Games in 2034, meaning the next four Asian Games are in place and the next available hosting year is 2038 – 18 years away.

Doha put forward a compact and risk-free bid, with all sports stadiums already in place. The award of the Asian Games will further boost its profile as a world-class sports city, capable of hosting major international events in a variety of sports. Qatar will host the next FIFA World Cup in 2022.

Riyadh has never hosted the Asian Games, but will now welcome Asian Olympic Family to Saudi Arabia’s capital city in 2034.

Before the vote took place, OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said he had met with representatives of the two candidate cities the previous evening, and they had agreed to a proposal that the city with the highest number of votes would host the 2030 Asian Games and the city with the second most votes would host 2034.

Sheikh Ahmad said he had made the move in the spirit of “friendship, solidarity and unity” and to produce a “win-win” situation.

Before starting the vote under these circumstances, Sheikh Ahmad asked for the support of the 45 NOC delegations – and they approved unanimously, with nobody against this proposal.

“I believe you are making history, and I will be proud to have two Asian Games in West Asia,” Sheikh Ahmad said. “Thank you Asia for your solidarity and coordination.”

The voting numbers in the host cities election were 27 for Doha, 10 for Riyadh and there were 8 abstentions.

Previous Asian Games host cities: 1951, New Delhi, India; 1954, Manila, Philippines; 1958, Tokyo, Japan; 1962, Jakarta, Indonesia; 1966, Bangkok, Thailand; 1970, Bangkok, Thailand; 1974, Tehran, Iran; 1978, Bangkok, Thailand; 1982, New Delhi, India; 1986, Seoul, Korea; 1990, Beijing, China; 1994, Hiroshima, Japan; 1998, Bangkok, Thailand; 2002, Busan, Korea; 2006, Doha, Qatar; 2010, Guangzhou, China; 2014, Incheon, Korea; 2018, Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia.

The 19th Asian Games will take place in Hangzhou, China, from September 10-25, 2022, 20th edition in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan from September 19 to October 4, 2026.
