KALYANI (Bengal): Churchill Brothers beat Mohun Bagan 4-2 in the I-League here on Sunday.

Willis Plaza (2nd min, 38′) and Robert Primus (29′) helped the visitors take an unassailable lead before Bagan pulled one back through Fran Gonzalez in the 34th minute.

Radanfah Abu Bakr (76′) put the match beyond the Mariners, who found some solace when Subha Ghosh added their second in the end.

Churchill, who fielded an unchanged eleven that defeated Punjab FC in their season opener, ran roughshod over their opponents who made one with Ashutosh Mehta starting for the first time this season.

Plaza opened the scoring early after he drilled home a cross from Gambian Dawda Ceesay.

Bagan’s Spanish duo Colinas and Beitia, with support from Naorem and Britto, created openings but failed to convert them.

Against the run of the play, the visitors doubled their lead through Primus.

Gonzalez scored from the spot to raise some hopes for the home side, but it wasn’t enough as the Goans were the better team which won an important away match.

Churchill, with six points from two games, currently top the points table followed by Gokulam Kerala, who are behind on goal difference.

Plaza’s double strike earned him the man of the match award.

Indian Arrows look for win

Indian Arrows, All India Football Federation’s developmental side, will be hoping for a win when they take on former champions Aizawl FC at the Tilak Maidan on Monday. The will kick-off at 7 pm.

“We had a good game against Gokulam, but in patches. In some parts, we were very good but there are still a lot of things to improve and work upon,” said Arrows coach Shanmugam Venkatesh.

Arrows got their season underway against Gokulam, and despite a resilient showing, fell short by a goal.

Aizawl coach Stanley Rozario exuded confidence after their defeat against Northeast United in the previous match.

“The match was played at a high tempo and both teams played with tremendous fighting spirit,” said Rozario.

Both seem focused as they are yet to taste a victory going into the 10 fixture of the 13th Hero I-League season.
