ADELAIDE: Alex Carey produced a composed and commanding century on his home ground while Usman Khawaja silenced his critics with a defiant 82 to put Australia firmly in control on day one of the third Ashes Test against England at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday.
Initially overlooked by selectors, Khawaja was only recalled to the XI moments before the toss after Steve Smith was ruled out with vertigo. The veteran opener responded in style, steadying the innings under intense heat and proving that reports of his international decline were premature. His patient knock provided much-needed stability after early setbacks.
Carey then took centre stage, crafting a majestic 106 that anchored Australia’s innings and frustrated England’s bowlers in taxing conditions. His century, built on calm shot selection and smart running, lifted the hosts into a strong position.
After captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat, Australia reached 326 for eight at stumps despite the late loss of Smith. Mitchell Starc was unbeaten on 33 with Nathan Lyon yet to score. For England, Jofra Archer was the standout performer, finishing with impressive figures of 3-29 after a relentless spell on a demanding day in the field.
