Biggest Rule Change: What to Expect in Formula 1 in 2026

DOHA: The 2025 Formula 1 season has concluded with McLaren securing both the constructors’ and drivers’ championships, but the sport is now on the brink of a dramatic transformation. From 2026, Formula 1 will usher in a new set of technical regulations and welcome an 11th team to the grid, marking one of the most significant shifts in the sport’s history.

Sweeping Technical Overhaul
The 2026 regulations represent the biggest rule change F1 has seen in years — if not ever. Cars will be smaller, lighter and more environmentally focused. They will be 30kg lighter, 10cm narrower, and powered by engines using fully sustainable fuels.

Power Units: A New Balance
While the engines will remain 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, their internal workings will change substantially. The MGU-H, which recovers energy from the exhaust and turbo, has been removed. In its place, the hybrid system’s contribution has nearly doubled, creating a near 50-50 split between electric power and internal combustion.

Aerodynamics Rewritten
The dramatic shift in power unit philosophy has forced a rethink of car aerodynamics. The venturi-style ground-effect underbody introduced in 2022 will be abandoned. Instead, Formula 1 will introduce movable front and rear wings designed to boost straight-line speed and allow for greater energy harvesting during braking.

How Will the Racing Change?
The combined overhaul of chassis and engine rules is unprecedented in Formula 1. Never before have both areas been altered so extensively at the same time, leaving significant uncertainty over how the racing will evolve.

Drivers have already raised concerns about potential quirks in how the cars will behave. At times, the internal combustion engine will act primarily as a generator for the battery, meaning engines could be running at maximum revs even through certain corners.

Goodbye DRS, Hello Push-to-Pass
Another major change is the removal of the Drag Reduction System (DRS). With rear-wing movement now required for energy management, overtaking will instead be aided by a push-to-pass system, allowing drivers to deploy extra electrical power for short bursts.

An Unpredictable Future
As Formula 1 prepares to enter this new chapter, many questions remain unanswered. What is clear, however, is that 2026 will redefine how the cars look, sound and race — potentially reshaping the competitive order for years to come.
