DOHA: Austria may have fallen just short of lifting the FIFA U-17 World Cup™, but their remarkable run in Qatar has already secured a permanent place in the nation’s football folklore.
Reaching a World Cup final for the first time at any level, Hermann Stadler’s side defied expectations throughout the tournament. Though still hurting after their narrow 1-0 defeat to Portugal in the Doha final, the Austrian coach was quick to underline the magnitude of his team’s achievement.
“I am very proud of my team,” Stadler said. “What the players achieved at this World Cup was magnificent. It is the greatest success in Austrian football history… The way the lads improved from game to game and performed as a team… It was fantastic.”
Austria’s campaign was built on consistency, cohesion and resilience. They won seven of their eight matches, scoring 17 goals and conceding just twice. In the final at the impressive Khalifa International Stadium, they pushed the European champions all the way.
Anisio Cabral’s first-half strike ultimately separated the sides, but Austria came desperately close to equalising late on when Daniel Frauscher hit the post. Despite the disappointment, Stadler urged his players to hold their heads high.
“My players gave their all, but unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough… Today the disappointment prevails, but tomorrow the world will look very different again.” Austria may not have left with the trophy, but they return home as history-makers and national heroes.
