Amir Cup: Saeed wins trap gold, Al Rumaihi finishes second

DOHA (Qatar): Overnight leader Saeed Hamad Abusharib continued where he left off by winning the Trap event at the 2020 Amir Cup Shooting & Archery Championships at the Losail Shooting Range on Saturday.

The 38-year-old, who notched a perfect score in one of the three rounds on Friday, repeated the feat today in one of the two rounds on Saturday to qualify for the medal round.

Tokyo Games-bound shooter Mohamed Al Rumaihi, who is the only Qatari to qualify for the 2021 Olympic Games, finished second.

“This is first competition I am taking part since March this year,” Al Rumaihi told KhelUpdates.com.

Al Rumaihi added that the competition was a good tune up for shooters especially for him who is looking forward to his first Olympics.

“The preparations (Tokyo Games) have been good. The competition in Amir Cup was tough. I competed against some of the top Qataris who have represented the country in the past in top continental events like Asian Games.”

In the medal round, Al Rumaihi shot down 43 targets while Abusharib was successful in bringing down 45 clay pigeons in windy conditions.

Khalid Al Mohannadi, who was in the joint third place overnight also qualified for the final round and clinched the third spot after tough competition from Mohammed Ali Khajaim and Masoud Hamad Al Athba.

The event is the first shooting competition taking place in Qatar since March and is serving as a good build up for shooters looking to make to the Games in the upcoming international events.

Qatar has got just one quota for shooting for the Tokyo games while a few of them are in the running including Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah, who is bidding to qualify for his seventh Olympic Games.

Rashid Hamad, who represented Qatar at the 2008 Games in Beijing and the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, is one shooter, is also in the race qualify for the Games.

In the women’s section, Al Dana Al Mubarak, who won a gold medal at Islamic Solidarity Games and represented the country at the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia, is also expected to well in the events leading to the Olympics.
