Indian Wells : World number one Carlos Alcaraz defeated Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Masters, where he will face Daniil Medvedev after the Russian ended defending champion Jack Draper’s title run.
Alcaraz maintained his perfect start to the season, improving his record to 16-0 with a composed performance against the tricky Briton. The Spaniard controlled the first set and recovered quickly after falling 0-2 behind in the second to seal the win.
“It was really difficult, I struggled with Cameron’s style,” Alcaraz said. “I played solid and aggressive when I could and I’m happy to be at this level.”
Medvedev advanced with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Draper, although the match featured a controversial moment. Chair umpire Aurelie Tourte awarded Medvedev a point after a late video review ruled that Draper had caused a hindrance by raising his arm during a rally, a decision that drew jeers from the crowd.
“I got a bit distracted. I let it go and I let the umpire decide,” Medvedev said after the match.
Elsewhere, Alexander Zverev defeated Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals of an ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time at Indian Wells. The German will face world number two Jannik Sinner, who comfortably beat American Learner Tien 6-1, 6-2.
In the women’s draw, Aryna Sabalenka advanced after a tight 7-6(0), 6-4 win over Canada’s Victoria Mboko.
Meanwhile, Elina Svitolina produced one of the tournament’s biggest upsets by defeating second seed Iga Swiatek 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. The Ukrainian capitalised on early errors from Swiatek to claim the first set and later secured the decisive break in the third to reach the semi-finals at Indian Wells for the first time in seven years.
Elena Rybakina also progressed to the last four, continuing her strong run in the tournament.
