Doha, Qatar: Al Wakrah Basketball Club clinched their first win of the 2025-2026 Men’s General Basketball League season, defeating Qatar Sports Club 80-75 in a thrilling match at Al Gharafa Club’s arena.
The game marked the opening of the second round of the championship.
The contest was closely fought, with both teams exchanging leads throughout much of the game.
Al Wakrah ultimately sealed the victory in the final minutes, driven by the experience of their players and the standout performance of Wesley Mark, who led the team with an impressive 26 points, earning him the match’s top performer title.
The game started with a fast-paced rhythm, ending the first quarter in a 20-20 tie after balanced offensive efforts from both sides.
Al Wakrah gained the upper hand in the second quarter, outscoring Qatar SC 21-19, capitalizing on precise shooting and solid defense under the basket.
The third quarter saw Al Wakrah maintain their momentum, led by Mark and supported by accurate three-point shooting, finishing the period 19-15.
In the fourth quarter, Qatar SC, led by their standout player Dejan Janic, who scored 23 points, mounted a comeback, narrowing the gap to just one point with a 21-20 score in the final period.
However, Al Wakrah held firm, securing the win with a five-point margin at the final buzzer.
This victory marks Al Wakrah’s first win of the season, following a loss to Al Sadd (91-83) in the opening round, boosting their tally to 3 points.
Meanwhile, Qatar SC suffered their second consecutive defeat, having previously fallen to Al Rayyan (97-86), leaving them with 2 points.
The second round of the league continues on Saturday, with Al Arabi facing Al Sadd at 6:00 PM, followed by Al Gharafa versus Al Shamal at 8:00 PM.
The round concludes on Monday.
