RIYADH (Saudi Arabia): Al Hilal legend Mohammad Al Shalhoub announced his retirement from competitive football on Thursday.
The 39-year-old midfielder’s announcement came just a day after Al Hilal finished their 2019-20 Saudi Pro League campaign by clinching their 16th title. which was Al Shalhoub’s eighth.
Al Shalhoub posted a video on his social media accounts, revealing his decision after more than two decades of action.
Born in Riyadh in 1980, Al Shalhoub started his professional career with Al Hilal in 1998 before making his international debut for Saudi Arabia two years later in a friendly against Lebanon.
The impressive number 10 took part in three editions of the AFC Asian Cup Finals while he was also a member of the Saudi Arabia squads that played in the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cup Finals.
In addition to his eight league titles with Al Hilal, Al Shalhoub was part of the squad that won the 2000 Asian Club Championship before contributing to their continental triumph last year.
He also won the 2000 Asian Super Cup, the 2002 Asian Cup Winners Cup, 11 Crown Prince Cup titles and two Kings Cup of Champions crowns with the Riyadh giants.
