CALCUTTA (India): Candidate Master Aronyak Ghosh joined India’s growling list of International Masters after he bagged his third IM norm at the ninth round of World Junior Championship in New Delhi on Thursday.

Needing a draw to fulfill his title requirement, the 16-year-old drew against compatriot Saurabh Anand to complete the mandatory third norm.

Seeded 48th on the ranking list, Ghosh held seed Iranian Grandmaster Amin Tabatabaei in the first round before beating Indian GM Arvind Chidambaram.

His performance at the Worlds was preceded by his impressive performance at the World Under-16 Championship in Mumbai where he won a bronze.

Ghosh, who achieved his maiden IM norm at the Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival in August, will represent India in the World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad in Corum, Turkey.

The tournament will be held in the northern Anatolian city from October 28-November 6.

Given his current form, Ghosh is expected to do well in the competition.

His father, Mrinal, a chess arbitrator, and mother Sanchita, an advocate, have boosted their son’s career by giving him exposure at the international tournaments.

The proud parents are also hoping that their son will carry on their good form while representing the country.
