Do praises decision to switch Thai League 1 to September

BANGKOK (Thailand): Tristan Do has praised the decision to switch the Thai League 1 season to a September start, with the Bangkok United defender believing the competition will have greater appeal to players around the world.

Thailand’s 2020 domestic season is currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but plans are in place to resume in September should the situation have improved enough to allow competitive sport to restart.

The Thai FA has long-since discussed the idea of moving the schedule to be more in line with European leagues and the unprecedented situation around the world at present could have inadvertently offered them the chance to do so sooner than expected.

Should the campaign resume in September, it will do so with Do’s Bangkok United on top of the table after the capital city side claimed a perfect four wins from four before all action was brought to a halt.

“I really think this could be great, there could be so many positive things to come from moving the season,” said the Thailand international defender.

“To reboot the league and start in September could really change how it is viewed [around the world] and it could improve how attractive it is for players coming here.”

Born in France, Do first moved to Thailand in 2014 when he joined BEC Tero Sasana before he spent three hugely successful seasons with Muangthong United in a side that included the likes of Chanathip Songkrasin and Theerathon Bunmathan.

The 27-year-old joined Bangkok United at the beginning of 2019 and his new side were in the title race until the final few weeks of last season, only for three draws in their final five games to bring an end to their challenge.

“We’re an ambitious team, so we have to start every season thinking that we have to win the title; every game, thinking that we have to win this game – this is the only way that you get somewheres,” said Do. (Source: AFC)
