MADRID (Spain): Cycling star Alberto Contador has decided to auction the bike he rode in the 2011 Tour of Italy and Tour de France to raise funds for the Spanish Red Cross’ fight against the coronavirus.
Earlier, Spanish tennis great Nadal has also said he would sell the shirt he wore when he won the 2019 French Open.
Seven-time grand tour winner Contador, who retired in 2017, and 19-times Grand Slam winner Nadal made the announcements on Twitter.
“Hello everyone, we are still struggling with this COVID-19 and I want to make one more effort. I will auction this original Giro-Tour 2011 bike, which is very special for me. The proceeds will go to #cruzrojaresponde,” Contador said.
The bidding, on Spanish eBay, started at 2,500 euros, and was around 13,500 euros ($14,661) at 1200 GMT on Thursday. The auction, will end on April 15, shortly before 1000 GMT.
Apart from races from which he was later disqualified, Contador, who retired in 2017, won the Vuelta three times and the Tour de France and Giro twice each and is one of seven riders to have won all three.
