Ronaldo exits Portugal stage with records intact but farewell clouded by rift

LONDON :  Cristiano Ronaldo has spent more than two decades establishing himself as one of Portugal’s greatest sporting figures, but his announcement on Thursday that he was retiring from international football came without a stadium farewell, as a dispute over his role in the team clouded the end of an extraordinary career.

The 41-year-old leaves with 234 appearances and 146 goals, both men’s international records, having helped transform Portugal from perennial contenders into European champions.

Yet the final chapter of his international career has been overshadowed by a disagreement over his place in the side.

Ronaldo’s announcement followed a fallout with coach Jorge Jesus, whose decision not to select him against Norway brought tensions between the veteran forward’s ambitions and Portugal’s changing needs into sharp focus.

The ending may be uncomfortable, but his achievements remain extraordinary.

Portugal won their first major international trophy at Euro 2016 before adding Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. Ronaldo leaves with three major international honours, alongside individual records that have made him synonymous with Portuguese football.

FROM TEARS TO TROPHIES

Ronaldo made his international debut against Kazakhstan in August 2003, aged 18, and experienced his first major disappointment a year later when hosts Portugal lost the Euro 2004 final to Greece.

Redemption arrived 12 years later, although in circumstances few could have imagined. Portugal secured their greatest international triumph at Euro 2016, but their captain watched much of the final from the sidelines after suffering an early injury against France.

Ronaldo left the pitch in tears, only for his team mates to secure a historic victory without him.

For a player accustomed to deciding matches, the defining team achievement of his international career came after his own participation had been cut short.

The World Cup, however, remained an elusive prize.

Ronaldo became the first player to score at six editions of the tournament and finished with 11 goals, but those individual milestones never translated into the ultimate team success he craved.

His final World Cup campaign ended with Portugal’s defeat by eventual champions Spain in the last 16 in 2026.

His scoring record at the tournament also reflected an unusual imbalance, with 10 of his 11 goals coming in the group stage. His only knockout-stage goal was a penalty against Croatia in the last 32 in 2026.

AN UNEASY ENDING

Ronaldo’s final European Championship appearance in 2024 had already intensified the debate over his future in the national team.

Eight years after lifting the trophy, he failed to score at Euro 2024 as Portugal exited in the quarter-finals, with his performances attracting criticism and raising questions about whether the country’s record scorer remained the best option to lead the attack.

Similar doubts had emerged during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, when his role in the team became a subject of debate.

The dispute with Jesus brought that question back into focus, shifting the discussion from Ronaldo’s achievements to his diminishing certainty of selection. His retirement announcement on November 5 brought that chapter to a close.

For nearly two decades, Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been compared at every turn, but their international farewells have taken contrasting paths.

Argentina supporters celebrated Messi at a friendly in Buenos Aires in October after he helped his country reach a second consecutive World Cup final.

Ronaldo’s departure, by contrast, has come amid a dispute over his role in Portugal’s team, without the public celebration that accompanied his great rival’s farewell.

The Portuguese Football Federation thanked Ronaldo for his contribution and said he should receive the “tribute he deserves”, leaving open the possibility of an on-pitch farewell. Whether that will happen remains uncertain.

If this is how his international career ends, it will be a melancholy conclusion to a journey that brought Portugal unprecedented success.

The debate over when Ronaldo should have stepped aside will continue, but so will the records, the trophies and his contribution to changing the ambitions of Portuguese football. Long before Portugal had to contemplate life without him, he had helped redefine what the country could achieve.
