SYDNEY : Australia have rested most of their frontline test players for the upcoming one-day international and Twenty20 series against England, with Mitchell Marsh named captain of both squads as the team manages a demanding international schedule.
Travis Head, Matthew Renshaw, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Josh Inglis and Cooper Connolly are the only players from Australia’s test side that lost a series in South Africa on Saturday to be included in the ODI squad. None will feature in the T20 series.
Fast bowler Mahli Beardman, 21, returns to international cricket after an injury layoff and is one of six players selected for both formats.
All-rounders Jack Edwards and Liam Scott are also included in both squads and are set to represent Australia on home soil for the first time. Promising 20-year-old batter Oliver Peake has been named in the ODI squad.
“We are in the middle of a highly demanding phase of our schedule,” chief selector George Bailey said in a statement.
“Our multi-format players are transitioning directly from the tour of South Africa into an ODI and T20 series, leaving a narrow window to ensure the squad is physically prepared and fresh for the upcoming New Zealand test series.”
The three-match ODI series against England begins in Perth on November 13, with further matches scheduled in Adelaide and Hobart.
The five-match T20 series will take place in Melbourne, the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra in late November and early December.
Australia will then host New Zealand in a four-test series starting on December 9.
