DOHA : The Local Organizing Committee for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, in collaboration with the Qatar School Sports Association, has announced the group draw for 32 schools participating in the new season of the Mini Basketball World Cup.
The draw was unveiled at a press conference, with schools ranked according to their final standings in the inaugural 2025-2026 edition. Each school selected a national team to represent in a competition designed to replicate the format of an international tournament.
The initiative aims to encourage basketball participation among students while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship and cultural exchange ahead of Qatar’s hosting of the 2027 World Cup.
Abdulla Ali Al Mawlawi, executive director of communications and guest relations for the tournament, said the competition would help expand basketball’s grassroots base and provide students with opportunities to experience international sporting values.
He added that cooperation with FIBA and the Qatar School Sports Association would contribute to the tournament’s long-term legacy by encouraging basketball in schools and identifying young talent.
Tournament director Predrag Savovic stressed the importance of establishing a sustainable legacy beyond major sporting events, including educating younger generations about basketball’s history and development.
Abdulrahman Al Muftah, executive director of the School Olympic Program, said the initiative combined sport and education while allowing students to learn about different countries through their participation.
He confirmed that the World Cup simulation is currently designated for male students.
The new season will also feature interactive activities to introduce school communities to Qatar’s preparations for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 and promote greater sporting participation.
