DOHA : Qatar has been included on the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) list of interested parties seeking to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, marking a new stage in Doha’s bid to host the event.
The IOC announced the next steps in the selection process on Tuesday, publishing a handbook for potential hosts and confirming the list of interested parties that will progress through the revised process.
Qatar’s inclusion begins a new phase of its bid, with the country drawing on its experience of hosting and organising major international sporting events.
Fatima Sultan Al Kuwari, CEO of the Doha 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Bid Committee, welcomed the IOC’s confirmation.
“It is no secret that Qatar has shown an ambition to bid for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Today, that ambition has been justified by the IOC’s confirmation that Qatar has been named as an interested party,” she said.
Al Kuwari said the confirmation marked the beginning of a longer bid process and that Qatar hoped to build on its record of hosting major international events.
We believe Doha 2036 would offer a future-ready model for the Games that is athlete-centred, connected, accessible and designed to ensure that sport and society emerge stronger long after 2036,” she said.
“This is a unique opportunity to celebrate sporting excellence, culture and human connection, bringing the Olympic and Paralympic Games to a new region. We are excited by the journey,” Al Kuwari added.
Qatar’s inclusion as an interested party moves its Doha 2036 bid into the next stage of the IOC’s revised selection process.
