GUWAHATI, India — Shubman Gill hit the fastest double century in one-day international history as India chased down West Indies’ 405-7 with an eight-wicket victory in the second match of the three-game series on Wednesday.
Gill finished unbeaten on 223 from 133 balls, converting the fastest ODI century of his career into his second double century in the format. His first came against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023.
Rohit Sharma also scored a century, reaching three figures from 72 balls while passing 12,000 ODI runs during a 255-run opening partnership with Gill. Jayden Seales dismissed Sharma for 101 shortly after he reached his 35th ODI century.
Virat Kohli made 29 from 19 balls before Shamar Joseph dismissed him with India on 320-2. Ruturaj Gaikwad added 31 from 37 balls as India reached their target with 39 balls remaining.
“When it was 13 overs, it felt like we had fielded for 25 overs, the way they were batting,” Gill said. “At half time, 400 on the board, there was a bit of pressure. No matter the pitch or ground, chasing 400 is not easy. Very proud of that performance and happy to stay unbeaten till the end.”
West Indies had earlier posted their first 400-plus ODI total, with John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all scoring centuries.
Campbell made 101 from 65 balls before Gurnoor Brar dismissed him, while Hope scored his 20th ODI century and Jangoo smashed 114 from 77 deliveries. Roston Chase added a late cameo as West Indies scored 76 runs in the final 10 overs.
