NAGOYA, Japan : Qatar squash player Abdullah Al Tamimi withdrew from his men’s singles Round of 16 match against Japan’s Tsukue Ryunosuke at the 20th Asian Games because of a hamstring injury.
Al Tamimi had been aiming to reach the podium in Aichi-Nagoya after winning bronze in the men’s singles at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou.
The Qatari player said he had been managing a minor hamstring tear before the tournament but was unable to continue after the injury worsened during his Round of 16 match.
“I tried to manage the injury and continue competing, but the tear became worse and I was unable to continue playing,” he said.
Al Tamimi said the injury prevented him from completing his campaign and that he had hoped to compete for another medal for Qatar.
His withdrawal brings his Asian Games singles campaign to an end, while Tsukue Ryunosuke advances to the quarter-finals.
