DOHA : Chinese Taipei, Moldova and South Korea lifters claimed multiple gold medals on the second day of the 10th FISU World University Weightlifting Championship in Doha, with competition continuing at Education City through Sept. 12.
The four categories contested on Wednesday were the women’s 57kg and 61kg and men’s 70kg and 75kg events. The championship features 116 athletes from 21 countries across 16 weight categories.
Chinese Taipei’s Yi-Ci Juang completed a clean sweep in the women’s 57kg category, winning gold in the snatch with 85kg, the clean and jerk with 105kg and the overall title with 190kg.
Britain’s Asees Dhanda took all three silver medals with a total of 181kg, while Puerto Rico’s Santiago Gutierrez claimed bronze in all three disciplines with 177kg overall.
In the women’s 61kg, Yu-Ling Chiu of Chinese Taipei won gold in the clean and jerk with 108kg and the overall with 191kg, while Poland’s Maria Polka took gold in the snatch with 85kg and finished second overall with 190kg.
Moldova’s Dan-Dorin Betca dominated the men’s 70kg, sweeping the three gold medals with a 134kg snatch, 160kg clean and jerk and 294kg total. Chinese Taipei’s Lin Pao-Ti won all three silver medals, while South Korea’s Im Dohyeon claimed bronze throughout.
South Korea’s Seong-hyeon Hong won the men’s 75kg clean and jerk with 175kg and the overall title with 301kg. Hungary’s Lajos Ujvari took snatch gold with 131kg and finished second overall, while Poland’s Michal Kosciuk won silver in the clean and jerk and snatch.
Hamad Saleh Al Shiba, Head of Sports Programs at Qatar Foundation and a Qatar Collegiate Sports Federation board member, said Education City’s hosting demonstrated Qatar’s ability to stage major international sporting events.
The championship continues on Thursday with the women’s 69kg and men’s 85kg categories, each contested in two groups.
