Doha  : The Qatar national basketball team will begin its second‑stage campaign in the Asian qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 today, Thursday, 27 August 2026, with a highly anticipated clash against China. The game tips off at 7:00 p.m. and marks the team’s first official test in the fourth qualifying window, as Qatar aims for a strong start in front of its home fans.

The encounter carries special significance as it will be played on Qatari soil at Al Janoub Arena, which officially opens its doors to basketball by hosting this high‑profile match. With a seating capacity of approximately 8,200, the venue’s hosting of the game forms part of ongoing preparations for the 2027 World Cup, serving as a key test of readiness one year ahead of the global event.

Qatar is well aware of the challenge posed by China, one of Asia’s basketball powerhouses. Historical records favor the Chinese side, which has won all six previous meetings between the two teams under FIBA competition. Their last encounter came at the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup, where China prevailed 92–67. Earlier matchups saw China win 89–65 in 2015, 96–85 in 2013, and 92–61 in 2009, among other victories.

The Qatari squad enters the contest following an intensive preparation period, including a training camp in Turkey focused on enhancing physical and technical readiness, as well as testing tactical options ahead of official competition.

Beyond the China fixture, Qatar will continue its journey in the fourth window with an away game against Japan on 30 August 2026. The campaign resumes in November, when Qatar hosts Korea on 26 November and Japan on 29 November in Doha. The second stage concludes with two away fixtures: against China on 26 February 2027 and Korea on 1 March 2027.

In parallel with the qualifiers, Qatar is preparing for another continental challenge at the 20th Asian Games “Aichi–Nagoya 2026” in Japan. The team has been drawn into Group B alongside Iran, Jordan, and Chinese Taipei. Qatar will open its basketball campaign against Iran on 10 September, face Jordan on 12 September, and conclude the group stage against Chinese Taipei on 13 September.
