MELBOURNE : Australia have dropped opening batsman Jake Weatherald for the second test against Bangladesh and recalled fellow left-hander Matt Renshaw after a poor run of form.
There were no other changes to Australia’s 13-man squad announced on Tuesday.
Weatherald scored 23 and nought in Australia’s shock nine-wicket defeat by Bangladesh in Darwin, taking his average to 20.36 after six tests since making his Ashes debut.
Renshaw, who has played 14 tests, last featured for Australia more than three years ago against India in Delhi. The Queenslander has revived his international prospects after a strong domestic campaign, scoring 499 runs in six Sheffield Shield matches at an average of 49.90.
While Weatherald has been left out, number three Marnus Labuschagne appears to have retained his place despite further scrutiny after scoring only 32 runs in the first test.
Australia head coach and selector Andrew McDonald said on Monday that Labuschagne needed to produce “big runs” to secure his position in the test side.
Australia will attempt to level the two-test series against Bangladesh when the second match begins in Mackay, Queensland, on Saturday.
