GALLE: Persistent rain continued to delay the start of play on day two of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka in Galle on Sunday, with no play possible during the opening session.
Umpires were forced to call an early lunch as the rain failed to relent, leaving India firmly in control at 288-2.
Devdutt Padikkal remained unbeaten on 131, while Rishabh Pant was 27 not out when play was halted.
India, with eight wickets in hand, will look to build a substantial first-innings total when conditions allow play to resume, with a score of around 500 in sight.
Sri Lanka, meanwhile, need a quick breakthrough to prevent India from tightening their grip on the match.
The weather has so far prevented Sri Lanka from applying pressure with the ball on the second day, leaving the hosts facing an uphill task once play resumes.
