ANKARA : Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor said on Tuesday they had opened negotiations to sign free agent Mohamed Salah, with chairman Ertugrul Dogan expressing hope the Egyptian forward would complete the move later this week.
“Negotiations have been launched to transfer professional footballer Mohamed Salah, who is in a free status, to our club,” Trabzonspor said in a statement to Turkey’s Public Disclosure Platform.
Speaking to broadcaster A Spor, Dogan said the transfer had not yet been finalised but expected Salah to arrive in Istanbul for a medical on Wednesday before travelling to Trabzon to complete the formalities.
He added that the contract could be signed on Thursday.
Salah became a free agent after leaving Liverpool this summer following a trophy-laden nine-year spell in which he scored 257 goals in 442 appearances, winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League.
The 34-year-old enjoyed a remarkable 2024-25 campaign, scoring 29 Premier League goals and providing 18 assists to equal the record for most goal involvements in a single season while setting a new mark for a 38-game campaign.
He swept the Premier League Player of the Season, Golden Boot and Playmaker awards, becoming the first player to win all three honours in the same season.
His influence declined last season, however, as he managed seven goals and seven assists in 27 league appearances and was left on the bench for Champions League matches, leading to a public disagreement with then-Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
Salah began his European career with Swiss club Basel in 2012 before joining Chelsea. He also had spells with Fiorentina and AS Roma prior to his move to Liverpool in 2017.
Trabzonspor, traditionally regarded as Turkey’s fourth-biggest club after Fenerbahce, Galatasaray and Besiktas, finished third in the Super Lig last season and will enter the Europa League playoff round.
Local media reported that Salah had also held talks with Besiktas, but negotiations broke down over financial terms and image rights.
