Two-time Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen will make his long-awaited return from injury at next month’s European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, the Norwegian middle-distance runner announced on Monday.
The 25-year-old has not competed since last September’s World Championships after being sidelined by an Achilles injury that required surgery earlier this year.
“I’ve heard Birmingham is nice this time of year,” Ingebrigtsen wrote on Instagram, tagging the European Championships’ official account.
Ingebrigtsen’s spokesperson, Espen Skoland, confirmed to Norwegian broadcaster NRK that the Norwegian would compete in Birmingham, although it has yet to be decided which events he will enter.
“He is looking forward to being back. It is a huge relief, and he is excited,” Skoland said.
Ingebrigtsen won Olympic gold in the 1,500 metres at the Tokyo Games before adding the 5,000m title at the Paris Olympics, cementing his status as one of the sport’s leading middle and long-distance runners.
The European Athletics Championships will be held in Birmingham from Aug. 10-16.
