COLOMBO : Qatar advanced to the semi-finals of the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group IV tournament on Friday after finishing second in Group B with one win and one loss in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The Qataris recovered from a 2-1 defeat to hosts Sri Lanka in their opening tie by beating the Northern Mariana Islands 2-1 to secure a place in the last four.
Qatar will face Kyrgyzstan in Saturday’s semi-final, with victory guaranteeing promotion to the Asia/Oceania Group III competition.
The team, comprising brothers Mousa Shanan and Mubarak Shanan along with Jabor Al Mutawa, prepared for the tournament with a two-week training camp in Thailand.
“We are fully focused on tomorrow’s match and achieving promotion to Group III,” Al Mutawa said after Qatar’s victory.
Under the tournament format, teams competed in a round-robin group stage, with the top two nations from each group advancing to crossover semi-finals. The winners of the two semi-finals will earn promotion to Asia/Oceania Group III.
