The Miami Heat briefly posted and then deleted a YouTube livestream titled “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference”, prompting widespread speculation that the four-time NBA champion could be set for a return to the franchise where he won two titles.
The livestream, scheduled for July 27, appeared on the Heat’s YouTube channel on Tuesday night before being removed, sparking a frenzy among fans as James has yet to announce where he will play his 24th NBA season.
A Heat spokesperson told ESPN the post was uploaded in error by the team’s social media department while preparing for the possibility of James signing with the franchise.
The Heat did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
James, 41, announced his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers last month, setting off one of the NBA’s biggest off-season storylines. The Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers have all been widely reported as leading contenders for his signature.
Speculation has also spread to the betting markets, with BetOnline Sports & Casino offering wagers on when James will announce his decision. July 24 is the favourite date for an announcement, while Miami is considered the frontrunner to land the veteran forward.
Rich Paul, James’ long-time agent and friend, said earlier this week that the NBA’s all-time leading scorer would not be pressured into making a decision.
“We’re not going to be rushed,” Paul said on the “Game Over with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul” podcast released on Monday. “It’s his choice to make and when he makes the choice, he’ll make it.”
