Spain’s Paula Badosa upset fourth seed Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine 6-3 6-1 on Tuesday to advance to the second round of the UniCredit Iasi Open in Romania.
Kalinina struggled throughout the match, committing eight double faults and holding serve only twice as Badosa wrapped up victory in straight sets.
Spain’s Kaitlin Quevedo also produced an upset, defeating sixth-seeded home favourite Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3 6-1. Quevedo saved 12 of the 14 break points she faced and converted six breaks of serve.
Third seed Oleksandra Oliynykova of Ukraine came through a pair of tiebreaks to beat Turkish lucky loser Ipek Oz 7-6(1) 7-6(5), while Hungary’s fifth seed Panna Udvardy defeated Spain’s Leyre Romero Gormaz 6-3 4-6 6-3.
Eighth-seeded Frenchwoman Elsa Jacquemot and Kazakhstan’s ninth seed Yulia Putintseva also progressed with straight-set victories.
Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek, Armenia’s Elina Avanesyan, Egypt’s Mayar Sherif, Russians Alevtina Ibragimova and Elena Pridankina, and Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa also advanced to the second round.
Top seeds advance in Athens
Top seed Clara Tauson of Denmark recovered from an early deficit to beat Japanese qualifier Nao Hibino 7-5 6-4 in the opening round of the Athens Open.
Tauson overturned a break deficit in the opening set, converting four break points while restricting Hibino to two.
Second seed Ann Li eased past Uzbekistan’s Maria Timofeeva 6-2 6-1 in 79 minutes, while third-seeded Czech Barbora Krejcikova defeated Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova 6-3 6-3 in the same amount of time.
Seventh seed Tereza Valentova of the Czech Republic cruised to a 6-1 6-2 victory over Belgium’s Sofia Costoulas.
Italian lucky loser Miriana Tona earned her first WTA main-draw win after outlasting Greek wild card Sapfo Sakellaridi 7-6(2) 5-7 6-2 in a match lasting three hours and eight minutes.
France’s Carole Monnet, Russia’s Alina Korneeva and Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich also advanced to the second round.
