LONDON : Second seeds Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador fought back from a set down to beat Australia’s Storm Hunter and Marc Polmans 4-6 7-5 6-2 on Thursday and win the Wimbledon mixed doubles title.
Hunter and Polmans made the brighter start, earning an early break to take the opening set and maintaining the pressure early in the second.
Ostapenko and Arevalo gradually found their rhythm, however, lifting their level at the crucial moments to turn the match around and claim their first Wimbledon mixed doubles crown as a partnership.
“I was frustrated after losing my serve in the first set, but I calmed myself down and told myself to keep fighting until the last point,” Ostapenko said.
“Marcelo was very positive and that helped us a lot.”
The victory made Arevalo the first player from El Salvador to win a Wimbledon title.
Already a two-time French Open men’s doubles champion, Arevalo added another Grand Slam trophy to his collection, while Ostapenko enhanced a résumé that includes the 2017 French Open singles title and the 2024 U.S. Open women’s doubles crown.
“Winning this title means a lot,” Arevalo said.
“I want to continue to inspire kids in my country that if you put in the effort and believe in your dreams, you can achieve great things in life.”
