LONDON : Naomi Osaka’s Wimbledon revival gathered pace on Friday as the former world number one swept past Australia’s Daria Kasatkina 6-1 6-3 to reach the fourth round at the All England Club for the first time.
The four-time Grand Slam champion has drawn attention throughout the tournament with her elaborate walk-on outfits, but it was her tennis that stole the spotlight as she combined power and precision in a dominant display.
Osaka, the 14th seed, entered Court One wearing another variation of her “Kill Bill”-inspired kimono ensemble, this time a floral-patterned robe, before quickly taking control of the contest.
She broke Kasatkina in the second game with a backhand winner and secured a second break with a deep forehand as she raced through the opening set.
“I’ve actually never won on this court, so I’m really glad to have made a really good memory here,” Osaka said after the match.
“Thank you guys for cheering us on, it was a really big honour for me to play here.
“I definitely felt really good. I’ve played a lot of matches on grass in the past two weeks.
“I felt confident, and she played good as well, so I’m happy with the result today.”
Osaka, who reached her first tour-level grasscourt final at Bad Homburg before retiring injured, briefly lost momentum after surrendering an early break advantage in the second set.
She quickly regained control, however, winning the final four games and converting her second match point to complete victory.
The Japanese player will next face either world number one Aryna Sabalenka or former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko for a place in the quarter-finals.
“I’m just trying to take it one day at a time, one point at a time,” Osaka said.
“I hope that I’m able to get further and further, but thank you guys for watching.”
