VANCOUVER, Canada : Switzerland advanced to the World Cup last 16 with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria on Friday, ending the North Africans’ campaign.
Breel Embolo gave Switzerland an early lead in the 11th minute before Dan Ndoye doubled the advantage just after halftime to secure victory at BC Place.
Switzerland controlled much of the contest after Embolo’s opener and strengthened their grip on the match when Ndoye found the net in the 46th minute.
Algeria were unable to mount a comeback as Switzerland defended their lead comfortably to seal their place in the knockout stage.
Switzerland will face the winner of Friday’s Round of 32 meeting between Ghana and Colombia for a place in the quarter-finals.
