Brazil forward Neymar has donated $250,000 to support relief efforts following the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela, according to Venezuelan news outlet El Sumario.com.

The report said the donation would help fund emergency humanitarian assistance, including food, drinking water, medical supplies and temporary shelters for people affected by the disaster.

“My heart goes out to the people of Venezuela,” Neymar was quoted by El Sumario.com as saying. “I hope this contribution brings strength and relief to the affected families.”

According to CNN, citing Venezuela’s National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez, at least 1,430 people have been killed, 3,238 injured and 3,142 families displaced after twin earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude struck the country on Wednesday.

Rescue teams continue searching for survivors, though operations have been hampered by repeated aftershocks and a shortage of heavy equipment.

The reported donation comes as Neymar continues his comeback with Brazil at the FIFA World Cup.

Head coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Sunday the 34-year-old forward had made significant progress in his recovery and was now capable of playing longer spells after returning from injury.

“In the last week, his progress has been significant,” Ancelotti told reporters. “Unfortunately, he could not play longer than 15 minutes before, but he is now doing well enough to play more.”

Neymar missed Brazil’s opening two World Cup matches before making a late substitute appearance in the team’s 3-0 victory over Scotland in their final Group C fixture.

Brazil, who finished top of their group for a 12th consecutive World Cup, will face Japan in the Round of 32.
